i first met javed ahmad ghamidi when i was a student. my teacher at the time, wasi ullah dasti, was a student of his too. i was a student of dasti from 1986 to 1992. i am sure that all the students of his would have experienced the same. he would give us assignments that we could not do in our daily lives due to the hard usage of time. he would also ask us questions to test our knowledge of islam. i have not forgotten the day he brought out the new principles of tafsir from under his clothes. the book was one of the first books that i had studied in the past ten years, and i was so excited that i wanted to go and meet this ‘teacher’. back then, i knew no one but wanted to speak to him. he politely refused to see me. as my cousin had been his student, i called him on the phone. i went to see him and we had an interesting discussion. i walked away thinking that i should write to him again, and his response was to write a book on salat. that was the very moment that salat became my favourite subject. after that i had to follow him more than my other teachers.
i had the pleasure of meeting javed ahmad ghamidi again when i became a student of islamic studies at al-mawrid institute of islamic studies from 1994 to 1999. i decided to return to my alma mater, because i had promised myself that i would start writing from where i left when i graduated. sadly, i was not able to return to al-mawrid after 1999. i had so many good teachers there. i have benefitted much from that al-mawrid, and have tried to return some of that education to others as a matter of profession. in march 2010, i joined al-mawrid as a faculty member.
